The Netcraft Server Survey is perhaps the best known example of a site devoted to tracking technology penetration on the net. On a monthly basis, Netcraft sends out a robot to query every visible web site on the net with a simple question: what server implementation are you running? The resulting market share figures are tracked eagerly by anyone involved in the web server market.
The report also predicts that the providers of the two currently dominant Web security technologies, Netscape Communications Corp. with SSL and VeriSign Inc. with digital certificates, will face increasing competition as the market matures.
How difficult it was to set up a site with accreditation from Verisign and strong encryption outside the U.S., since the U.S. bars export of its strong encryption technologies
Netscape and Microsoft may both be claiming victory in the Internet server wars, but a survey conducted by an English Internet consulting firm show that freeware public domain servers from Apache and NCSA dominate the Internet.
The Netcraft service seems to be well thought-out and implemented, and when compared with the cost of supporting an Internet connected network it is extremely competitively priced
Netcraft this month also looked at whether server vendors and producers were confident enough to run their own software, the real acid test of a Web server.
The most recent data is based on responses from more than 250,000 servers and covers all Internet domains.
