Many events that could adversely affect performance and reliability hit the hosting industry during August including Distributed Denial of Service Attacks, the Power Outage in the North East US and Canada, a much shorter outage in London, the Blaster Worm, the SoBig Virus, and a deluge of related mail from poorly written anti-virus programs.
Remarkably the numbers of failed requests to hosting company sites did not rise significantly during the month; a testament to the durability of the Internet. However this hid some big variations:
New York Internet, nearly always near the top of the reliability list on a daily basis, suffered a twelve hour outage during the North East power cuts, while in the last week the www.rackspace.com site has twice been taken out with by Distributed Denial of Service attacks.
Consequently, the Top 10 has a different composition this month, with two German sites and several companies appearing for the first time. www.above.net was previously ranked second in June, while Datapipe will be pleased by this demonstration of their reliability as they were in the area affected by the power outage. Eight companies in the top eighteen are running their sites on FreeBSD.
Cable and Wireless is the only site placed in the Top 10 during all of June, July and August.
Netcraft measure and makes available the response times of fifty two leading hosting providers’ sites The performance measurements are made at fifteen minute intervals from four separate points around the internet, and averages are calculated over the immediately preceding 24 hour period.
Fuller information on the measurement process and current measurements are available.
